Community Involvement

Members of the Maryland group support the Living Classrooms Foundation, with many of our Financial Representatives serving as mentors in the foundation’s Fresh Start program. The youths in this program typically have dropped out of high school and faced criminal charges. Fresh Start offers training in job readiness, academics and social skills, seeking to help these students succeed in their homes, communities, jobs, continuing education and personal relationships.

Students receive intense academic remediation training and receive their GED, return to public school, or move into adult education program. The average Fresh Start student advances math, reading and writing skills by more than 1.5 grade levels.

Our Financial Representatives offer Fresh Start youths a unique perspective on financial issues, job preparation, goal setting and long-term life vision. We emphasize a philosophy of “life by design,” helping program participants discover the rewards of living with purpose and intention.

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network – Maryland members also participate in Baltimore’s Race for the Cure, most recently registering 92 people from our organization in this annual run/walk to support breast cancer research.

Since 1996, we’ve been involved in the Hospice of the Chesapeake, serving community members experiencing advanced illness or bereavement. Managing Director Steve Roth helped raise funds for a new inpatient hospice facility, winning the 1998 Northwestern Mutual community service award and $10,000 for the organization.
